McCaskill and Blunt-Supported Plan to Fund Road and Bridge Repairs Would Create Massive Corporate Tax Break

Sens. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Roy Blunt (R-MO)  recently backed a bill to address funding shortfalls for road and bridge repairs in Missouri. According to a new analysis, the bill contains massive corporate tax breaks that could cost taxpayers an estimated $105 billion.

A first-of-its-kind report by MoPIRG Foundation shows reduced rates of car commuting in Missouri’s urbanized areas—including the Saint Louis and Kansas City —and increased use of alternative transportation.

Transportation in Transition

A review of data from the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Administration and Census Bureau for America’s 100 most populous urbanized areas – which are home to over half of the nation’s population – shows that the decline in per-capita driving has taken place in a wide variety of regions. From 2006 to 2011, the average number of miles driven per resident fell in almost three-quarters of America’s largest urbanized areas for which up-to-date and accurate data are available. Most urbanized areas have also seen increases in public transit use and bicycle commuting and decreases in the share of households owning a car.

New Report Shows Missourians Are Driving Less

Missourians have cut their per-person driving miles by 3.45 percent since 2005, reflecting the end of the nation’s long-term driving boom. Nationwide, the decline in driving has been even greater than in Missouri, with per-person driving miles down 6.87 percent nationwide during the same period.

Moving Off the Road

Forty-six states plus the District of Columbia witnessed a reduction in the average number of driving miles per person since the end of the national Driving Boom. The evidence suggests that the nation’s per-capita decline in driving cannot be dismissed as a temporary side effect of the recession.
