ON DAY OF ORAL ARGUMENT IN MCCUTCHEON V. FEC, LOCAL GROUPS GATHER TO PUSH BACK ON BIG MONEY IN POLITICS, DEMAND SOLUTIONS

MoPIRG, Missouri Sierra Club, Saint Louis NAACP, and the Vice-Chair of the Missouri House Ethics Committee gathered at the Old Courthouse in Saint Louis to push back on the power of big money in elections, as the U.S. Supreme Court today heard oral arguments in McCutcheon v. FEC. Advocates say the case would further increase the electoral clout of a few large donors.

New Report Shows Missourians Are Driving Less

Missourians have cut their per-person driving miles by 3.45 percent since 2005, reflecting the end of the nation’s long-term driving boom. Nationwide, the decline in driving has been even greater than in Missouri, with per-person driving miles down 6.87 percent nationwide during the same period.

Ag Subsidies Pay for 20 Twinkies per Taxpayer, But Only Half of an Apple Apiece

Federal subsidies for commodity crops are subsidizing junk food additives like high-fructose corn syrup at a rate that would buy 20 Twinkies for each taxpayer every year, according to MoPIRG's new report, "Apples to Twinkies 2013." Meanwhile, subsidies for fresh fruits and vegetables would buy just one half of an apple per taxpayer per year. These subsidies are part of the Farm Bill that expires in September.

Offshore Tax Havens Cost Average Missouri Taxpayer $783 a Year

With Tax Day approaching, it’s a good time to be reminded of where our tax dollars are going. MoPIRG released a new study which revealed that the average Missouri taxpayer in 2012 would have to shoulder an extra $783 in taxes to make up for the revenue lost due to the use of offshore tax havens by corporations and wealthy individuals.
