News Release

Recalls announced for more than 165,000 life-threatening infant sleepers

Inclined sleeper products have been linked to at least 73 infant deaths
For Immediate Release

PHILADELPHIA -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that four companies have issued recalls for their inclined infant sleepers. Since their introduction, inclined sleepers have led to at least 73 infant deaths and pose a serious suffocation threat to babies. Despite these dangers and continuous advocacy from consumer groups, concerned parents and medical experts, some of these products still remain for sale.

Inclined sleepers fail to meet the safe sleep guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Parents and caregivers should stop using all versions of these products immediately, and if yours is made by one of the four companies named by the CPSC today -- Summer InfantEvenfloGraco and Delta Children -- you may be entitled to a refund.

Grace Brombach, U.S. PIRG Education Fund Consumer Watchdog associate, issued the following statement:

“For years, we’ve known that inclined sleepers threaten babies’ lives, and tragically, the evidence keeps piling up. Parents and caregivers should stop using any kind of inclined infant sleeper immediately, even if it hasn’t been included in a recall. All versions of these products put your baby’s life at risk.

“We’re grateful that the CPSC took this step today. Moving forward, the agency should guarantee that infant sleep products meet safe sleep guidelines and should issue a full recall to remove inclined sleepers from homes and day care centers across the country. In the meantime, we urge retailers and manufacturers to work as quickly as possible to stop the production and sale of these sleepers for good.”
